Essential Oils vs. Fragrance Oils in Candles: What’s the Real Difference?

If you’ve ever stood in front of a candle display and wondered:

“Is this made with essential oils?”

“Are fragrance oils toxic?”

“What’s actually safer for my home?”

You’re not alone.

At Hippie’s Homemade Candles, this is one of the most common questions we’re asked ~ especially as more people become conscious about what they bring into their homes.

So let’s clear it up with honesty and transparency.

First: Not All Fragrance Oils Are the Same

The word “fragrance oil” has become a blanket term online ~ and unfortunately, it’s often misunderstood.

There are major differences between:

• Low-cost synthetic fragrance oils

• Standard commercial fragrance blends

• Phthalate-heavy perfume oils

• High-quality botanical-based fragrance oils

• Pure essential oils

They are not interchangeable.

Just like food has grades and standards, so do fragrance materials.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts derived from flowers, leaves, bark, citrus peels, roots, and resins.

They are beautiful in:

• Diffusers

• Body oils

• Massage therapy

• Room sprays

As a massage therapist for over 17 years, I deeply respect essential oils and their therapeutic uses.

However…

Why Essential Oils Alone Don’t Always Work Well in Candles

This is where social media has simplified something that’s actually quite technical.

When you light a candle, the flame creates high heat. Many essential oils:

• Have low flash points

• Evaporate quickly

• Lose aromatic complexity under combustion

• Produce very light scent throw when burned

To make an essential-oil-only candle smell strong, you would often need extremely high percentages ~ which can become wasteful and sometimes unsafe.

Trust me, I've tried it... It just doesn't work.

And you've probably been told that some candles are only made with essential oils at markets, they smell good cold... But as soon as its lit..... Nothing!

That’s called marketing everybody, and you will probably never buy from that vendor again.

That's not the mission here at Hippie's Homemade Candles. Our mission is to have you love your candle both cold and lit, to trust that I've hand sourced every ingredient inside of it and made you a candle that not only smells spot on, but is clean and safe for your home.

What Are High-Quality Botanical-Based Fragrance Oils?

This is what Hippie’s Homemade Candles uses, blended with essential oils.

Botanical-based fragrance oils are professionally formulated for safe combustion in candles.

They are:

• Phthalate-free

• Designed specifically for wax binding

• Tested for safe burn performance

• More stable under heat

• Stronger and more consistent in scent throw

Most High-quality fragrance oils contain:

• Naturally derived aroma compounds

• Isolated plant molecules

Transparency Without Fear

At Hippie’s Homemade Candles:

• We use 100% soy wax.

• We use lead-free cotton wicks.

• We use premium botanical-based fragrance oils and essential oils.

• We avoid heavy synthetic fillers and low-grade perfume oils.

Every oil we use is selected for:

• Burn safety

• Clean performance

• Scent integrity

• Longevity

After 13 years of hand-pouring candles, I care more about long-term quality than trends.

Why We Don’t Share Our Suppliers

Another question I often get is:

“Where do you buy your oils?”

Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours testing, researching, blending, reformulating, and refining to find oils that meet my personal standards.

Just like a chef doesn’t list their farm sources on the menu, sourcing is part of the craftsmanship.

What I can share is this:

Every ingredient is intentionally chosen for quality and safety.

That’s my promise.

The Bigger Conversation

The candle industry is evolving.

Consumers are becoming more aware. And that’s a good thing.

But oversimplified claims like:

“All fragrance oils are toxic.”

“Only essential oil candles are safe.”

Don’t tell the whole story.

The truth is more nuanced.

And when something is going to be heated and burned in your home, nuance matters.
